ALCP media release update, 17 August 2005
Last chance to stand up and be counted
The Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party invites last-minute electoral
and list candidates in the 17 September 2005 general election! Our
deadline is Friday, 19 August.
Those interested in standing on the party list, or capable of representing
their area as an electorate candidate, are invited to contact party
secretary, Irinka Britnell, 03 981 5878, PO Box 13-4
alspsecretary [at] slingshot.co.nz
A provisional list of names has been drawn up that is still subject
to final revision. Candidates have also been provisionally accepted
for the following electorates:
Te Tai Tokerau
Wellington Central
West-Coast Tasman
Christchurch East
-----------------------------------------------
All credit to the Green Party for attempting to advance the cannabis
issue in the face of political apathy, as well as resistance from
certain ill-informed sectors of the community. However, the public
should realise that a system of instant fines - like building more
prisons - is only a band-aid solution which won't improve the law
and order situation in New Zealand.
''Government is spending hundreds of millions of dollars building
prisons, instead of recognising that criminalisation is unnecessarily
and tragically producing the criminals to fill them.'' says Aotearoa
Legalise Cannabis Party Leader, Wellington lawyer Michael Appleby.
The ALCP believes that adults have the right to freedom of choice
unless that choice harms other people or our planet. - Young people
have the right to credible information and realistic health messages
free of double standards. Under the present system they are getting
neither and it shows.
Only a fully regulated system, similar to that for alcohol and tobacco,
will work. In advocating R18 legalisation and regulation, Aotearoa
Legalise is still the only party in NZ that is prepared to properly
address this complex issue.
The ALCP also calls on unregistered voters, whether they use cannabis
or not, to get onto the electoral roll and stand up for their rights
(Freephone 0800 36 76 56 or freetext your name and address to 3676).
People can still register to vote right up until Friday 16 September,
but will have to cast a special vote.
