Cannabis party approach Benson-Pope
The Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party (ALCP) today announced that it has formally invited David Benson-Pope to stand for the party in the Dunedin South electorate. Mr Benson-Pope said that he would consider standing for another party if approached, after losing the Labour party nomination.
"We think Mr Benson-Pope would make a great addition to the ALCP team, at a time when the party is struggling to gain the support of 'middle' New Zealand," says Dunedin smokesperson Julian Crawford. "Cannabis prohibition affects all New Zealanders regardless of whether they smoke the soft-drug, because it aids organised crime. Black market trade in cannabis is highly lucrative and would become subject to taxation under proposals made by the ALCP. David Benson-Pope has the image and the experience the Cannabis Party is looking for as it gears up for a 'high-stakes' election campaign."
"Mr Benson-Pope has previously won the seat with a 10,000 vote majority. Many thousands of South Dunedin constituents also use cannabis. This is thought to work in Mr Benson-Pope's favour if he accepts the nomination."
The ALCP looking froward to receiving a reply from Mr Benson-Pope.
