Switched On Gardener owner Michael Quinlan jailed

The owner of the Switched on Gardener chain of hydroponic stores has been sentenced to four years and three months in jail.

Judge Andree Wiltens refused the option of home detention as he sentenced Michael Quinlan at Auckland District Court today.

General manager Peter Bennett, 43, was also sentenced, receiving prison time of three years, nine months.

Two women broken down in tears as the sentence was read out to the packed court room.

Broadcaster and celebrity Alison Mau has joined the fight for legal cannabis after speaking out about the issue on TV1's current affairs show Seven Sharp.

Mau was interrupted by other presenters as she tried to explain that cannabis was beneficial to the likes of Cancer, AIDS and Glaucoma sufferers.

Lawyer appeals Cannabis Conviction after devastating Jury Verdict

Rotorua beneficiaries advocate Paul Blair has again appealed to the Court of Appeal, claiming he was wrongly convicted on cannabis charges.

In January, Blair, 62, was found guilty after a retrial in the Hamilton District Court of one charge of selling cannabis and one charge of possessing cannabis for the purpose of supply in 2010.

Single-Issue Parties are the future under MMP

Under MMP, the party holding the balance of power can form the Government with either side of the political spectrum and require the Government to advance their policies.

When the balance of power is held by a single-issue party, the Government has no choice but to offer that party policy-concessions relating to their single-issue. Otherwise that party would not be getting anything in return for supporting the Government.
